Ava DuVernay and Autumn Riley

Ava DuVernay's birth occurred on the 24th of August, 1972 in Long Beach California. When she was a young girl, DuVernay's aunt Denise was a great influence on her enthusiasm for artistic expression and creative thinking. She was a night nurse to allow her aunt to have the space she required during the day to indulge in the passion of art, literature, as well as theatre. DuVernay was introduced to the 1961 movie West Side Story by her aunt. DuVernay was instructed by her mom that art can be used as a tool for activism. After graduating she attended the University of California Los Angeles where she received qualifications in English and African American studies. DuVernay developed an interest in the field of broadcast journalism while a student. As an intern, she worked for CBS News at the time of the O.J. Simpson trial. DuVernay recalls being asked to check the trash at the home that belonged to a member of the jury. As a result of her work she was dissatisfied with journalism and moved into the public relations industry. DuVernay was offered a job straight out college, as a publicist in the young age of a studio. The company she founded for her own PR, The DuVernay Agency was established in 1999. Besides PR, the agency developed several lifestyle websites including Urban Beauty Collective, Urban Thought Collective Urban Eye, HelloBeautiful.
